ANTIQUE JAPANESE SUMIDA GAWA POTTERY SIGNED LIDDED HUMIDOR INOUE RYOSAI. This piece is in great condition with no clay damage at all what so ever, a little missing red paint on the lower unglazed areas as to be expected with an item of this age. It retains it’s original sea sponge inside the lid. This measures 6.5″ Tall X 5.5″ across. This crouching, or squatting figure has great 3 dimensional character with a very amusing expression on his face, while an insect crawls across his cheek. There is a small child figure crawling on the lid along with a realistic shell form that acts as the handle, also with great detail. A wonderful thick foamy glaze in both high gloss glaze and matte finish. His hands and feet are very detailed, including on the bottom of the humidor where you can see the bottoms of his feet! It is signed on the base and by comparison, I believe it to be the signature of the Ryosai family and I would date this right around 1900 +/. Sumida Gawa pottery items were manufactured in Japan near the Sumida River (which runs through the Asakusa district of Tokyo) and were exported to Western countries between the late 1800s and 1920s. Sumida Gawa pottery items are typically very heavy and feature three-dimensional figures such as plants, animals, landscapes or humans, such as martial artists, peasants, pilgrims, government officials, Buddhist disciples and children. The style of applied figures on a surface with flowing glaze was invented around 1890 by the Seto potter Ryosai I, who worked in Tokyo from about 1875 to 1900. A great number of the pieces. Are probably the work of a single family – Inoue Ryosai I (1828-), Inoue Ryosai II born c. Many of the sales I attend are Amish owned and cater to the Amish community for their farm and estate liquidation needs. I know a little about a lot, but not everything about all the items I have listed. No one likes to receive an item in ruins, I’ve experienced that myself and go to great lengths to ensure my buyers never will. Don’t pay before asking or ask after paying, I will not be able to honor your requests once you do so. Most everything I offer is used, vintage or antique. It cannot be expected to be in the condition of a new item. I describe my items in detail, but there will always be imperfections from use, age and wear that I might overlook. All defects, wear and damage that I find when I closely examine and clean my items, are disclosed in my description and in the photos. DAMAGE IN TRANSIT: If your item does arrive damaged in transit, please contact me about filing a claim. I hope that once you receive your item and are satisfied, that you will leave me feedback in return. It’s deeply appreciated and helps others to shop my items with confidence.
