This superb ginger jar, dating from around 1880 and with the highly desirable gosu blue color that is characteristic of the early Meiji era, is a wonderful example of that excellence. Featuring a house and a variety of floral arrangements with decorative borders on its four sides, and a dragon on its lid, this ginger jar retains both its lid and its inner seal in good condition. The jar is also signed on its base with a signature that is partially effaced, but the overall level of quality suggests to me an important maker of the period. Measuring 5 1/2 inches high (including its lid), the jar is 3 3/4 inches wide. There is virtually no rubbing to the decoration on this fine piece. The jar has no cracks, chips or restoration, and is clearly worthy of being included in an advanced collection of Japanese ceramics.
