Gorgeous 5 JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD SATSUMA TEA JAR with MORIAGE & ENAMELSIGNED
What a gorgeous antique Meiji period Satsuma tea jar this is! Features a classic ginger jar shape, with gently rounded shoulders and a flattish top, 2 scenes of scholars, with one scene of a courtesan, lots of intricate geometric Imari details, and oodles and oodles of thick moriage, enamel and gilding. Done in creams, peach shades, rust, blues, white, black, and gray and lots of gilding. The detail and patterning is astonishing, the form is exquisite, and the surface crackling just adds another dimension. Signed on both pieces. An amazing piece of antique pottery! Has staining on the inside, and crazing, which is to be expected on a piece of this age. Very minor gilt loss in a few spots. 5″ tall x 4″ in diameter at the widest part. NOTE: As of January 27, 2013, the United States Postal Service significantly raised their rates again up to 21% on some services! Please contact me for details. Antique Meiji Japanese Satsuma Pottery Moriage Lidded Jar / Vase Pierced Knop
1197 Meiji Satsuma Vase. A late 19th century Japanese early Moriage style covered jar style vase. It is of three parts with lid, body and stand. The cell pattern around the shoulders is in low relief with various patterns in gilt and enamels. The main body has further cell patterns and two scenes of people with extensive use of gilt. The stand has feet in the form of elephants heads and the patterning on this is in quatrefoil form. The lid is particularly interesting with a large pierced knop reminiscent of a a puzzle ball. There are no marks for identification but it would date around 1880. It is certainly not a form you come across often and the work on the patterning is particularly meticulous. The knop has been re-glued to the lid, either from being broken off, or re-stuck if the original adhesive had failed, there do not seem to be any significant losses. Some chips to the inside lip of the lid. Normal wear, some gilt rubbing and some small losses of decoration. Two of the small lugs around the shoulders of the body look to have been broken off and reattached. Fine crazing in parts. See images for overall presentation. If for any reason you are unhappy with your item please let us know as soon as possible, and we will do our best to put things right.
